The tram's last stop

Quando Elisa uscì dall'ufficio, il cielo era già scuro. Era stata una giornata lunga, piena di riunioni, telefonate e cose da fare.
When Elisa left the office, the sky was already dark. It had been a long day, full of meetings, phone calls, and things to do.

Alla fermata successiva salì un anziano con una borsa molto pesante. Elisa si alzò subito e gli offrì il suo posto.
At the next stop, an elderly man got on carrying a very heavy bag. Elisa immediately stood up and offered him her seat.

L'uomo la ringraziò e cominciò a raccontarle che per quarant'anni aveva guidato proprio quel tram.
The man thanked her and began telling her that he had driven that very tram for forty years.

«La città cambia continuamente», disse, «ma le persone hanno sempre bisogno di qualcuno che le accompagni da un posto all'altro.»
"The city changes all the time," he said, "but people will always need someone to take them from one place to another."
