Luca apre il computer e lavora al bar per due ore.
Luca opens his computer and works at the café for two hours.

Dopo il lavoro, incontra la sua amica Anna.
After work, he meets his friend Anna.

"Ciao, Luca! Vuoi prendere un caffè con me?" chiede Anna.

1. Expressing Frequency: Ogni + Time Expression

We use ogni to talk about repeated actions and routines. It means every.

Structure:

ogni + singular noun

Examples from the story:

  • Ogni mattina va al bar.
    Every morning he goes to the café.

More examples:

  • Ogni giorno studio italiano.
    I study Italian every day.

  • Ogni settimana vado in palestra.
    Every week I go to the gym.

💡 Remember: After ogni, the noun is always singular.

2. The Verb Piacere (To Like)

In Italian, piacere works differently from English.

The thing you like is the subject of the sentence, while the person who likes it uses an indirect pronoun.

Structure:

  • Gli piace bere un cappuccino.

  • Mi piace stare qui.

3. Possessive Adjectives: Suo and Sua

Possessive adjectives show who something belongs to.

Careful! The possessive adjective agrees with the thing that is owned, not the owner!

  • il suo libro = his/her book

4. The Verb Volere (To Want)

Volere is a modal verb used to express wishes or intentions.

Example from the story:

  • Vuoi prendere un caffè con me?
    Do you want to have a coffee with me?

Conjugation:

  • io voglio — I want

  • tu vuoi — you want

  • lui/lei vuole — he/she wants

  • noi vogliamo — we want

  • voi volete — you want

  • loro vogliono — they want

Examples:

  • Voglio imparare l'italiano.
    I want to learn Italian.

  • Vuoi mangiare una pizza?
    Do you want to eat a pizza?

5. The Preposition Da and Time Expressions

Italian uses da in maaaaany common expressions...

Example:

  • Dopo il lavoro
    After work

Other useful time expressions:

  • prima del lavoro = before work

  • dopo cena = after dinner

  • alla fine della giornata = at the end of the day

    6. Talking About Duration: Per + Time

We use per to express the duration of an action.

Example from the story:

  • Luca lavora al bar per due ore.
    Luca works at the café for two hours.

More examples:

  • Studio italiano per un'ora.
    I study Italian for one hour.

7. The Verb Parlare + Preposition Di

When we talk about a topic, we usually use:

parlare + di

Example from the story:

Remember:

di + il = del

Examples:

  • parlare del film = to talk about the movie

  • parlare della scuola = to talk about school

8. Adjectives After Verbs: Describing a State

After verbs like essere and tornare, adjectives describe the person or the situation.

Example from the story:

  • Luca torna a casa felice.
    Luca goes home happy.

Other examples:

  • Sono stanco.
    I am tired.

  • Lei è contenta.
    She is happy.

💡 Adjectives change depending on gender and number:
